Restaurant Review – Kelkiewyn

One of the things I love about the Cape is the amount of non-franchised restaurants. You actually have to look for a Spur or KFC and I can’t remember seeing a McDonalds on my last few visits.
Kelkiewyn in Villiersdorp was probably my best restaurant find on my last trip. Villiersdorp itself isn’t really much to write home about. It is a traditional small South African town with really not much going on, except for this little restaurant found at the end of the town’s main road.

David and I stopped in for lunch. The outside area is set under a huge tree right next to a little stream with a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. It is calm and peaceful and so very pretty.
The menu was, for me, very limiting as I can’t eat anything with flour or dairy but they had enough for me to choose from 2 or 3 things. I eventually decided on mutton curry and David had the chicken schnitzel. It was one of those plates of food that you never want to end it was so deliciously perfect.
I was even more impressed that they had rose by the glass (it seems restaurants in the Cape frown upon this). It was the Villiersdorp Rose and it was so divine. We looked for a bottle each time we went into town but it was sold out at the Spar, Ok and Discount Liquors.
Their prices were reasonable. The service was friendly and efficient.
Villiersdorp is a 90 minute drive outside Cape Town but I can honestly say it is well worth the drive and apparently they have the best milkshakes in the world! If you drive through Franschoek then it makes for a very pretty drive.
