Margarets House – A Place of Safety
Posted on 09. Feb, 2010 by Laura in Uncategorized
As part of our Ladies on Lunch initiative we wanted to include a “Ladies on Lunch Help” component.
I have found a small, new home that I think would be perfect for us as LoL and F2F to support.
The organisation is run by a lady named Margaret, who I met about 2 weeks ago, from her 3 bedroom home in Soweto. Currently she has 6 young girls with her ranging in age from 6 years to 21 years old.
She is not registered as a home but as a place of safety. So she may not keep the girls permanently – it depends on whether they can find placement for them. She receives R16 a day per child from the government so it works out to about R480 a month per child.
She is hoping to find her oldest daughter accommodation elsewhere and then use her room – which is outside the main house – to house a further 4 children.
Margaret’s biggest need is obviously food. She goes through 4 loaves of bread a day between breakfast and lunches for the girls.
I plan to visit Margaret once a month and it would awesome if each time we go I could take with a bag of goodies we have collected – be it clothes, food, toys, linen – anything you have that you are willing to donate.
Those ladies who attend the LoL events please let me know if you are willing to bring with something to donate each month. You do not have to specially buy anything, you can bring with anything you may have at home that you can spare.
If you are not in Joburg or do not attend our lunches then please mail me or leave a comment and I will get in contact with you about how to help out.

This sounds very achievable.

What a great idea! As soon as I manage to attend one of these LOL events I will definitely bring something along for the girls.

I sure we have some stuff we can give, I am not sure if our stuff is all too young for her kid though
